As of March 6, 2015, SUCCESS by DESIGN Consulting has joined the American Wind Energy Association as a business member as part of our ongoing effort to support renewable energy and the environment.

SUCCESS by DESIGN has supported energy programs and industrial/commercial/renewable energy efforts since being founded in 2001.  Dr. Penrose has been involved in commercial, industrial and utility energy, efficiency and reliability since 1992, including being the former Senior Research Engineer for the University of Illinois’ Energy Resources Center from 1997-1999.  Dr. Penrose and SUCCESS by DESIGN have been involved in a variety of programs surrounding electric machinery from standards development to academia and being directly involved in hybrid vehicle design, diagnostics and forensics to wind generation diagnostics and forensics.

“We look forward to supporting this important sector of energy in the United States and abroad, supporting efforts in maintenance, predictive maintenance and energy security.”  Says Dr. Penrose, “With our involvement and resources in electric machines, materials, reliability, diagnostics, forensics and predictive maintenance, we look forward to be part of paving the way into the energy future.”  Dr. Penrose who serves as a contractor to the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society, sits on numerous IEEE standards committees and presently serves as the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals ( executive committee as secretary, hopes to help bring these resources together for the good of the nation and energy economy.

Torsional Analysis and Electrical Signature Analysis

Electrical Signature Analysis allows you to look at the voltage and current FFT analysis, indications of load, the power use of the system and both problems upstream and downstream of the electric motor.  This can be done with AC and DC motors and in variable frequency drive applications.

Recently ALL-TEST Pro added a torsional evaluation capability to their ESA software.  This means that some signatures that were not apparent in the past now stood out sharply.

In Figure 1, we have the torque ripple related to a large low voltage motor on a Variable Frequency Drive.  As the image is across 0.5 seconds, and if you count the sine-waves, you come out close to 21 Hz.

Figure 2 shows the motor RMS current on top and the demodulated current on the bottom.  The ~5 and 15 Hz signals are known to relate to fan/pump impellors and indicate issues.  The ~21 Hz peak, in the past, would have been more of a mystery but is found to relate exactly to the torque ripple.  The just under 45 Hz signature is the running speed of the 2-pole motor at 45Hz.

The sidebands around line frequency in Figure 3 are well above the -65 db alarm rate with the highest being -38 db, meaning that the torque ripple is extremely serious.

Torque ripple issues are common in variable frequency drives with smaller ripple occurring in most instances and higher ripple when the drive is not properly set up or has not been statically and dynamically tuned.  High torque ripple will damage couplings, shafts, bearings and other components and relates directly to torsional vibration, which is not easily detected using vibration analysis.
