Torsional Analysis and Electrical Signature Analysis

^^Figure 1: Torque Ripple on Motor on VFD

Electrical Signature Analysis allows you to look at the voltage and current FFT analysis, indications of load, the power use of the system and both problems upstream and downstream of the electric motor.  This can be done with AC and DC motors and in variable frequency drive applications.

Recently ALL-TEST Pro added a torsional evaluation capability to their ESA software.  This means that some signatures that were not apparent in the past now stood out sharply.

In Figure 1, we have the torque ripple related to a large low voltage motor on a Variable Frequency Drive.  As the image is across 0.5 seconds, and if you count the sine-waves, you come out close to 21 Hz.

ESA Image Torque

^^Figure 2: Torque Signature (~21 Hz – highest peak; click to enlarge)

Figure 2 shows the motor RMS current on top and the demodulated current on the bottom.  The ~5 and 15 Hz signals are known to relate to fan/pump impellors and indicate issues.  The ~21 Hz peak, in the past, would have been more of a mystery but is found to relate exactly to the torque ripple.  The just under 45 Hz signature is the running speed of the 2-pole motor at 45Hz.

ESA Image Torque Sidebands

^^Figure 3: Modulated Current Signature with Sidebands Around the Line Frequency

The sidebands around line frequency in Figure 3 are well above the -65 db alarm rate with the highest being -38 db, meaning that the torque ripple is extremely serious.

Torque ripple issues are common in variable frequency drives with smaller ripple occurring in most instances and higher ripple when the drive is not properly set up or has not been statically and dynamically tuned.  High torque ripple will damage couplings, shafts, bearings and other components and relates directly to torsional vibration, which is not easily detected using vibration analysis.

We will discuss Torsional Vibration and Torque Ripple more in future posts.

NEWS RELEASE:

Dreisilker Electric Motors strategic partnership with Dr. Howard Penrose and Success By Design

March 4, 2015 — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Glen Ellyn, IL) Dreisilker Electric Motors, Inc., a recognized leader in Electric Motor Reliability and Repair services today announces a newly formed strategic partnership with Dr. Howard Penrose and his Success by Design Consulting service.

Effective April 1 2015, Dr. Penrose’s consultancy will lead Dreisilker’s Business Development and Research initiatives. Dr. Penrose and Dreisilker will focus their mutual efforts within the power generation/emerging energies sector as well as the mining, steel, and processing industries with the ultimate goal of developing new technologies and advancing the state of Motor Repair.

“This is an important strategic change for Dreisilker Electric Motors” states company President Leo F. Dreisilker. “Our ability to service our customers and provide advanced forensic and root cause analysis through our MotorSafe Repair Process, will be bolstered by Dr. Penrose’s efforts.”

“I’m excited for the opportunities that this new partnership brings,” adds Dr. Penrose. “Focusing on Dreisilker’s efforts to lead the industry in the proper repair of electric motors, and creating a platform for the evolution of Motor Management is a key goal for Success by Design.” Penrose continues, “Integrating industry based education will be an important element of this effort. The development of Motor Diagnostic classes, technical training in motor repair and forensic analysis methodologies, and the awareness of the effects of improper motor repair will be blended into our mutual efforts.” Dreisilker adds, “It’s our goal to raise the industry’s overall focus on how proper Motor Repair can serve to increase reliability, increase uptime and ultimately save energy.

Dr. Penrose will continue to advance standards in electrical apparatus repair as well as overall electric motor reliability and diagnostics throughout the various industries he serves. This will include continued participation in IEEE, SMRP and other organizations.
