Effective June 1, 2015, Howard W Penrose dba Success by Design becomes MotorDoc LLC.

Success by Design has been a sole proprietor business since May 2001 starting first as a technical, business and science fiction publisher/e-publisher then expanded into business, reliability and technical consulting and web services on January 1, 2004.  On June 4, 2009, the owner idled the consulting business remaining active as a publisher and web services company until returning to full services on April 1, 2015.  Since 1985 the owner has established the personal brand MotorDoc in reference to extensive work and research related to electric motor systems, reliability, energy efficiency, and other aspects from the generation of power to the product being developed.  The MotorDoc brand has become synonymous with excellence and knowledge in areas related to electrical machine systems.

In 1994, the MotorDoc (Howard Penrose) established the concepts for Motor System Maintenance and Management, sometimes referred to as the physical asset management of motor systems, as well as establishing the cause of failure for motors in inverter applications.  He became heavily involved in work related to energy efficient electric motor systems, the establishment of the definition of motor systems, and impact of motor repair on the life-cycle costs of commercial and industrial facilities and operations.  Dr. Penrose went on to creating the concept of evaluating motor systems for energy improvements while a Senior Research Engineer and Adjunct Professor of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Energy Resources Center.  He later identified the rules and effectiveness of motor circuit analysis and electrical signature analysis and, to this day, remains the first and only published author of books related to the topic of electrical motor diagnostics.  By 2006 he had participated in the design and application of the LEV VAD heart pump out of the University of Virginia and was heavily involved in the development of hybrid vehicle technologies and related electrical insulation systems.  He also introduced the concepts of Time to Failure Estimation of equipment.  By 2009, the MotorDoc had won 5 UAW-GM People Make Quality Happen Awards, had won two major book awards for business books and technical books, had frequent Electrical Motor Diagnostics and Motor System Maintenance and Management classes world-wide and was called on world-wide for his services.

Immediately upon return to consulting, Dr. Penrose has been contracted to act as a Chief Business Development Officer, troubleshoot equipment and has established the methodology for ‘base of tower’ testing of wind generators, which has the potential of reducing risk to wind generation technicians and having a significant effect on the cost to perform predictive maintenance, making the industry more cost effective.

The MotorDoc has remained active in speaking engagements, standards development committees, putting forth industry concerns in politics, and continued research in physical asset management, generators, motor systems, new technology in materials and machines, and much more.

As both SUCCESS by DESIGN, as a sole proprietor, and MotorDoc LLC, registered as a sole owner LLC, there is no change to existing contracts and services.  All new contracts starting June 1, 2015, will go under the name of MotorDoc LLC and all existing contracts remain under SUCCESS by DESIGN which is now a subsidiary of MotorDoc LLC and will remain so until either all contracts are moved or concluded.

MotorDoc LLC is registered with the State of Illinois and IRS as a business/industrial/commercial consultant, web services company, and publisher and has added product distribution of software and test equipment.  Details to be announced shortly.

This is a huge step forward as all branding had continued under the name MotorDoc, which has been more recognized than the publishing name established in 2001.

Updates and Workforce Health

It couldn’t have been said better than by the World’s Strongest Man, Donnie Thompson, who came up to 2XL Powerlifting LLC to train on injury prevention, body tempering and performance therapy: “I don’t have time to repair a symptom when I can fix the problem.”

Our special guest, Roberto Garza (now former center for the Chicago Bears), and several others, spent a lot of time demonstrating the application of these techniques.  It is hard to believe that this athlete was as mobile and flexible as he was after 14 years playing as a lineman in the NFL.  They apply these techniques daily – in effect physical failure prevention, root cause failure analysis when things go wrong, and condition-based techniques.  Yes, reliability for the human body.

It was amazing to hear the exact same language we use in the reliability, maintenance and physical asset management communities when discussing the human body and extreme performance.  Do we consider this when we look at M&R and asset management?  I mean, do we take a close look at the preventive measures applied to our human assets?  Especially in industries that are physically demanding?

After almost 8 weeks of continuous motion including running around Washington, DC, this past week, I did one simple technique that took five minutes and all of the pain in my lower back, legs, ankles and upper back literally disappeared (even two days later).  What are we doing for our work ‘athletes’ that are required to climb, stand, move, and perform other physical tasks that are repetitive?  The techniques we were exposed to, including my certified trainers at 2XL, are not just meant for athletes, we were performing them on IT professionals and an 82 year old suffering with chronic pain.

Contact me if you are interested in learning more.

In the meantime, I have not been idle.  A lot of really cool things will be announced in the near future.  Today, however, we will make sure that you are aware of my coming speaking engagements.

Also, I have been asked and have accepted the chairmanship of IEEE Standard 1415, the electric machine troubleshooting standard (IEEE Guide for Induction Machinery Maintenance Testing and Failure Analysis).  This includes evaluation of all known maintenance and testing technologies.

Significant changes will occur with the website during May and will be announced in future newsletters, including new services and resources.
